RCA appoints Andy Clifton as new Racing Director
The Racecourse Association (RCA) today announced that Andy Clifton, currently Head of Communications and Sponsorship at Newbury Racecourse, will become its new Racing Director later this year.
He will take over the role from Claire Sheppard, who is moving on to become Chief Executive of the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association, as previously announced.
Clifton has held a variety of key roles in many aspects of the racing and betting industries since becoming Deputy Manager of the Race Planning department at what is now the BHA in 1988.
In addition to four years in that position, he worked in PR for Ladbrokes for several years before becoming PR Director at The Tote, followed by two years as the Managing Director of racehorse syndicate operator Favourites Racing.
For the last 10 years, Clifton has worked in racecourse management, as Communications Manager at Cheltenham Racecourse and Executive Manager of Racing PR at the Hong Kong Jockey Club, prior to joining the Newbury Racecourse team in September 2014.
Commenting on the appointment, Stephen Atkin, Chief Executive of the Racecourse Association, said: “I am delighted to welcome Andy to the RCA team and to this key role for the RCA. Andy brings a wealth of experience in the sport and will complement well the existing skill sets within the RCA team at this exciting time for the sport, with the imminent launch of the Racing Authority.
“I am confident that Andy will further develop the advances made under Claire Sheppard. I should also like to thank Claire for her significant contribution to the RCA and to wish her well in her new career at the TBA.”
Andy Clifton added: “I am looking forward hugely to becoming part of the talented RCA team in the Autumn. It will be a wrench to leave Newbury after three years in which the racecourse has made significant progress on many fronts, but the opportunity to become Racing Director at the RCA at such an important time for the industry was not one that I could turn down.”
Andy Clifton will continue in his current role at Newbury for the next three months and takes up his new position on 4 September.
