Jonathan Garratt Elected to RCA Board

The Racecourse Association (RCA) is pleased to confirm that Jonathan Garratt (Kelso Racecourse) has been elected to join the RCA Board as a representative of small independent racecourses.

Jonathan will replace Hazel Peplinski (Perth Racecourse) who will stand down from the Board following her retirement after serving three years as a Director of the RCA.

Jonathan will join the RCA Board from Thursday 1st December 2022 and will be responsible for representing the views of small independent racecourses on all matters relating to industry governance, racecourse operation, the fixture list and funding and the direction of the RCA. His extensive racecourse management experience encompasses work at Kelso, Cartmel, Worcester and Fontwell Park Racecourses plus central administration with Scottish Racing.

The articles of the RCA require three Directors to represent small independent racecourses alongside one each from large independent racecourses, Arena Racing Company (ARC) and Jockey Club Racecourses (JCR). Jonathan will join Ilona Barnett (Stratford-upon-Avon Racecourse), Jonjo Sanderson (Wetherby Racecourse), Charles Barnett (large independent racecourses), Nevin Truesdale (JCR) and Martin Cruddace (ARC) alongside RCA Chair Wilf Walsh and Chief Executive David Armstrong.

Jonathan Garratt commented: “Independent racecourses face some challenging times over the next few months and years. It is important that the constituent parts of the industry work together and I believe that a robust RCA represents the most appropriate forum for racecourses to act, in a collegiate way, for the benefit of the sport as a whole.”

Wilf Walsh commented: “I am pleased to welcome Jonathan Garratt to the Board of Directors of the RCA representing small independent racecourses. Jonathan’s extensive experience within British racing should serve the Board well, a sentiment shared by his fellow racecourses who elected him to post.”

“I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to Hazel Peplinski for her service to the RCA Board. Hazel has provided sound counsel at every opportunity and we wish her well in her retirement.”
