Death of Joe Saumarez Smith- RCA Statement
The RCA is extremely saddened to learn the news of the death of former BHA Chair Joe Saumarez Smith.

Joe will be missed by all at the RCA and colleagues who worked with him during his career which was dedicated to the development of the British horseracing and gambling industries.
Having previously been part of the BHA Board, Joe stepped in as interim Chair in 2022. The RCA wholeheartedly recommended tenure be extended to a full term which he fulfilled with skill and grace until Joe took the decision to stand down earlier this month.
RCA Chief Executive David Armstrong commented: “It was a real privilege to work alongside Joe for so many years, and most recently to serve on the BHA Board under his stewardship.
“Joe was an immense source of knowledge with regards to global horseracing and the betting and gaming sector and worked tirelessly to enhance both industries. His recent work to spearhead the sport’s Levy reform and campaign against affordability checks was testament to how much he cared about the future of British racing.
“My thoughts are with Joe’s wife, Wanda, their children and all of his friends and colleagues. He will be missed by us all.”
The RCA has written to all racecourses inviting them to offer appropriate public condolences at forthcoming fixtures.
