Pontefract Racecourse Racegoers – Record Breakers!
Many of the racing headlines last week were dominated by Royal Ascot with their fantastic racing, stunning fashion and high society guests. However, Pontefract Racecourse carved out their own piece of history on Sunday 23rd June when setting a new world record with Guinness World Records ™ by creating the largest human image of a dog.

On their ‘Flat Cap & Whippet Family Day’, it is hard to imagine that anything could be more ‘Yorkshire’ than a giant whippet made entirely out of people wearing flat caps! With racegoers visiting from around the country, Guinness World Records ™ were able to confirm that a new World Record had been set with 691 racegoers helping to create the fantastic art.
Chief Operating Officer at Pontefract Racecourse, Richard Hammill, said:
‘We came up with the idea of trying to set a new World Record about 6 months ago. We’re fiercely proud of our Yorkshire heritage and we wanted to do something that really showed that off and our Flat Cap & Whippet Family Day seemed the ideal day to do it. There was such a fantastic atmosphere on the day and racegoers seemed really thrilled to have been able to be a part of it. Mums, Dads and kids of all ages all took part with the youngest being just a few months old and the eldest in their 90s! Everyone who took their place will always be able to say they were part of history!’
The incredible day attracted a crowd of almost 7,000 people – an increase of around 30% on the previous year.
